Take your time

I have worked in consulting for over 20 years and it has always been the same. An expectation that you know everything and you must reply quickly to the client or what is the point? they have hired you as an expensive expert after all! So the industry has all sorts of clever and not so clever techniques on make the client think we know everything.

That expectation is tiring if I am honest, you want to sometimes say “that is a great question, I could answer it with my thoughts right now BUT, I would like to give it some thought and come back to you well considered response next time we meet”

The world keeps getting faster, there is a shortage of thoughtful, timeless ideas that are worth sharing and when you have a moment that you think deserves pause, you should take the time, in whatever place makes you think and slow think it through.
