An ordinary life is in the living

In a previous job we had an employee, he worked in the post room. This guy had been at the company for a longer than anyone could remember. I dropped by his retirement drinks. We had a small gathering of colleagues to see him off with his gold watch. During the send off he told us all how would now enjoy his retirement by seeing places he aspired to visit but never did. Spending more time with his family. We waved him off, went back to our desks discussing how lucky he was. That night he died in his sleep!

One of the tragedies of life is that so many people put off living. If life is anything it is in the living, it is most enjoyed by savoring every simple daily moment for the blessing that it is.

  • When I am a grown up
  • When I graduate from University
  • When I am married
  • When I get promoted
  • When I retire

How terrible for a person to look forward at the limited possibilities of retirement. Then with a chill of regret look over their shoulder at the long life just spent delaying everything, earning a living and not living a life.

We’re all traveling through time, together, everyday of our lives… All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable life.

I just try to live everyday as if I have deliberately come back to this one day, to enjoy it… As if it was the full, final day of my extraordinary, ordinary life.
