I spent the weekend down by the sea. It is Dad’s birthday and we all met for a meal. In the morning I walked by the sea to get my morning coffee. There’s something about the sea that has a restorative effect on my weary soul. Is it the sound of the waves crashing against the shore or the salty scent of the air? Being near the sea has a unique way of refreshing my mind and my body.
Often when I am worried or concerned with a problem I stand at the shore’s edge, as close as I can be without getting wet. It reminds me of the vastness of the world and the smallness of my problems. The endless horizon I spy, stretches out before me, reminding me that there’s so much more to life.
The sea spray also has a calming effect also. I think it is the ebb and flow of the waves. The rhythm that slows my racing thoughts and soothes nerves. It is the sea’s blue-green hues that calms me no matter what.
So, if you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, consider taking a trip to the sea. Even if you can’t get away for long, even a short walk along the beach can have a restorative effect on your mind and body. Allow the sea’s calming rhythms and vastness to remind you of the bigger picture, and let your worries drift away with the tide.
