Be curious not judgemental

The title of this post is a quote by Walt Whitman. I think it might be my most favourite quote and how I try and live my life. It is a lot easier to be mean than to be curious. So mean people, on top of being jerks, are also lazy and uninventive.

Try and and be curious this week. Check yourself for moments when you are judging rather than asking more questions or not giving people the benefit of the doubt. We are hardwired to make observational judgements, we are constantly making assumptions and looking for patterns of behaviour. We have evolved that way – it kept us safe for thousands of years.

In todays modern, multi-cultural world these biases do not serve us well. It can be even self-destructive, it no doubt results in people’s feelings getting hurt or worse. Our observational judgements drive our behaviours, which become our habits which our children follow and so on it goes.

This week, I ask you to ‘Be curious, not judgemental’ and see how your view of the world is changed.
