As I walked into my garden this morning, I noticed the quietness around the nest box I installed to my wall 6 years ago. It was nearly empty, a stark contrast to the bustling life it held just days ago. A couple of late hatchlings remained, their siblings having fledged and Mum and Dad had left with them leaving these four birds to fend for themselves.
I watched as they tried to fly from the box but flew into the nearby bush. Within a few hours larger birds such as crows and magpies found them and took them one by one. This morning served as a grim reminder of nature’s impartiality. While it fosters life, it does not protect it from the inevitable hardships or the finality of fate. These remaining fledglings, too weak or too late, faced the reality.
In this distressing moment, I am reminded of the harsh lessons nature imparts—life, in all its vibrancy, is often met with unyielding challenges, and not all creatures find their wings in time.
“Nature is not cruel, only pitilessly indifferent. This is one of the hardest lessons for humans to learn.” – Richard Dawkins.
