Veeva Summit; Stoic reflections

This week the company I work for had a Summit in Europe. It is for our customers and was full of interactions and face to face opportunities and for in introvert like me I almost get overwhelmed.

I wanted to this morning reflect on stoic lessons that I think of when I approach this annual company event:

1. Focus on What You Can Control

At the event, there are countless variables: customer feedback, competitors’ strategies, and external perceptions. The Stoic principle of focusing on what you can control reminds you to concentrate on your preparation, engagement, and the value you deliver to attendees rather than external outcomes.

“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” – Marcus Aurelius

2. Practice Humility and Learn from Others

The summit is a melting pot of ideas, expertise, and perspectives. Use this as a chance to practice epistemic humility—recognizing that there is always more to learn and that every interaction can provide new insights.

“If anyone can refute me – show me I’m making a mistake or looking at things from the wrong perspective – I’ll gladly change. It’s the truth I’m after.” – Marcus Aurelius

3. Prepare for Setbacks with Premeditatio Malorum

Events like these can come with challenges—technical difficulties, tough customer questions, or unexpected feedback. The Stoics encouraged preparing mentally for possible difficulties so you can remain composed and resilient.

“The wise man looks to the purpose of all actions, not to the consequences. Beginnings are in our power: Fortune judges the outcome, and I do not grant her verdict upon me.” – Seneca

4. Live by Virtue: Excellence and Service to Others

The essence of the summit is about fostering customer success—a deeply virtuous act in Stoic terms. Dedicate yourself to providing honest, thoughtful, and valuable service, aligning your actions with virtue rather than chasing external recognition.

“Man is made for deeds of kindness.” – Marcus Aurelius

5. Stay Present and Engaged

With the whirlwind of sessions and networking, it’s easy to become distracted or overwhelmed. Stoicism teaches the importance of being present and fully attentive in every interaction, ensuring each conversation is meaningful and intentional.

“Just that you do the right thing. The rest doesn’t matter.” – Marcus Aurelius

6. Find Strength in Community

The summit is not just about individuals but about the collective success of the Veeva community. Reflect on the Stoic idea of sympatheia—the interconnectedness of all people—and how collaboration strengthens both individuals and the group.

“We are like limbs of a single body, united by a common interest in striving for the good of the whole.” – Marcus Aurelius

Summary

By drawing on these principles, I have been able to view the summit not just as a business event but as an opportunity to deepen my practice of Stoicism and my commitment to personal and professional excellence.
